How it is built

One basket.
Same every day.

Every four hours we record the lowest in-stock price per round for 25 calibers across LuckyGunner, SGAmmo, TargetSports USA, True Shot and Freedom Munitions. The day's closing price for each caliber is its lowest tracked in-stock price at the last check of the day.

Each caliber's close is divided by its price on the base date, October 9, 2026. The 25 ratios are averaged using fixed weights that roughly follow US retail volume (9mm Luger is 20% of the basket, 5.56 is 12%, and so on), then scaled so the base date reads 100. A reading of 104 means the basket costs 4% more than it did on October 9, 2026. The family indexes use the same method on their own calibers.

Because it is a ratio, a caliber's dollar price does not move the index. Only its percentage change does. The "basket" figure is the plain weighted average price per round, for people who want cents rather than points. Full detail, including the weights, is on the methodology page. The raw series is available as JSON at api.ammobourse.com/api/index. You are welcome to quote the index with a link to this page.
